Last summer, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick made headlines when he refused to stand for the national anthem before his games as a protest of racial injustice in the U.S. He later ended up being dropped from the team, and has spent the last few months desperately trying to find another team that would sign him.
This week, Kaepernick suffered another setback when New York Giants co-owner John Mara spoke out to voice his concerns about Kaepernick’s sideline antics and revealed how angry his team’s fans would be if one of their players pulled a similar stunt.
“All my years being in the league, I never received more emotional mail from people than I did about that issue,” Mara said, according to Bleacher Report. “‘If any of your players ever do that, we are never coming to another Giants game.’ It wasn’t one or two letters. It was a lot. It’s an emotional, emotional issue for a lot of people, moreso than any other issue I’ve run into.”
This comes amidst reports that Kaepernick has been blackballed by the NFL, as no team wants to sign him. Clearly, teams feel that the scandal Kaepernick would cause among their fans is not worth hiring him to be on their team.
